Wherever a process still requires including a paper receipt and/or the focus is primarily on capturing of the signature image, SOFTPRO is offering pen pads and writing tablets of partners. The selected devices have one thing in common: They are all equipped with the capability for capturing high quality signature data.
Most of the "other" devices (like the ones you may know from courier services or from the point of sale in some places) capture a rather pixilated image of a signature that is usually not applicable for later verification. Signatures taken on these devices may easily be claimed to be a forgery. In addition to this there are still several pen pads on the market which fail to meet the expectations of potential buyers also in terms of robustness and durability.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch with your regional sales contact. Spec sheets for particular devices can be made available.

Tablets in this segment are available in different sizes (up to A3) and capturing quality - from entry level devices to a high-end solutions. Some of these devices were primarily designed to capture signatures ("signature tablets / signature pads") - like the SignPad eSignio - while others are sold in large quantities as graphic tablets.
Note that some of these pads are not available through the general retail market as they are only sold in projects.

This device category is becoming increasingly popular and more and more devices are available on the market. Interactive Pen Displays have a large color display and enable a truly paperless workflow. The number of devices installed at the checkout of retailers and at self-service counters is growing steadily. Some of these devices are also used in the medical sector where signing is required for instance on patient consent forms and in medical documentation.

Interactive pen displays are available in sizes between 12" and 21". One of their benefits is that they can display documents or forms in full size. They are especially useful where handwritten content is filled into and sketches are added to the document (so called "scribbling"). Some of these devices leverage technology also built into Tablet PCs.
Note that some of these interactive pen displays are not available through the general retail market as they are only sold in projects.

Form Factor
- Convertibles are the de-facto major form factor for Tablet PCs. They offer the same user experience as regular notebooks plus all the benefits of working with a pen and digital ink. The ultimate tool for the mobile sales force (insurance, banking, … ).
- Slates are the preferred choice in environments where weight matters and the Tablet PC is carried around a lot – e.g. in hospitals. Successful applications rely on working with a pen also for filling forms with digital ink (and leveraging the handwriting recognition) and making annotations.
SOFTPRO recommends to consider Tablet PCs with Wacom's "Penabled" technology based on electro-magnetic resonance. A broad majority of Tablet PCs available on the market has these features built in. It is the technology which was defined as the standard technology for the TabletPC platform by Microsoft.

Not all Tablet PCs are pen-eabled. Today a lot of devices are sold as "Tablet PCs" with different sensors which may have a minor or major impact on the signature capturing quality:
- some devices used a combination of active digitizer and touch technology. Some HP and Lenovo tablet PCs leverage Wacom's DualTouch technology (pen and touch input), hence they have two sensors: one for electro-magnetic resonance another for touch. When using such a device make sure the pen sensor is activated (similar to devices where you can choose between track ball and touchpad as substitue for a mouse)
- others use touch technology only and a so-called "pen pointer" or "touch sticks" (both of them do not support to capture different pressure levels).
- Netbooks (such as the Asus Ee-PC) or Sub-notebooks are a rarely equipped with electromagnetic digitizers.
- Apple's upcoming Tablet PC (aka iPod touch XXL) is also very likely not ot support pen input and thus does not offer pressure differentiation.

Technical Terminology may be irritating. Some signature capturing devices on the market are labeled as "pressure sensitive". Note that in most cases these devices simply detect if pressure is applied or not. From a forensic expert point of view enhanced trustworthiness can only be achieved using devices which are able to protocol different pressure levels in a reliable manner.
