Integrating Signature Verification into 3rd party Applications

[SAN FRANCISCO] - 2008-04-07: Capturing signatures on a digitizing tablet is quite a common procedure - especially in the United States. However, most of these devices do not yet support the capturing of signatures for providing non-repudiation. This kind of hardware and software simply captures an image of the signature. For all those who seek to integrate reliable means to proof the expression of an intent and authenticity in their electronic processes with handwritten signatures, the specialist for signature verification, Softpro is now offering its latest version of its SignWare Software Development Kit (SDK). Tablet PCs and specially selected writing tablets or pen pads - such as the SignPad eSignio - capture static images and dynamic (biometric) signals of a signature. SignWare captures both sets of characteristics and offers a sophisticated option to verify signatures. Additionally, the verification automatically takes into account the natural variations in the signer's characteristics. Parts of this analysis have been successfully used for more than a decade in financial institutions worldwide.

SignWare has already been integrated by various of SOFTPRO's partners into their workflow processes for financial institutions, insurances, in e-government and the health sector. Some of these solutions are presented in the German Pavilion at the RSA Conference in San Francisco (booth 1332).

Softpro provides interested partners with an extensive documentation on request. The SDK contains:

  • Graphical User Interface (GUI) for capturing signatures
  • Interfaces for the development of individual components for signature capturing and verification (for static and dynamic characteristics)
  • Encrypted storage of reference data as raw data or as a template (optimized for storage capacity)
  • Interfaces for the integration of smart cards and smart card readers
  • Software libraries, header files, documentation, sample code
  • Support for Penabled Tablet PCs and selected high-quality pen pads

A very popular instrument is "SignAlyze" - a sophisticated toolbox for signature analysis. The application allows visualizing the various aspects of dynamic (biometric) signature characteristics. It is an expert tool for those working for fraud departments, in forensic analysis and everyone interested in the "science of signing".

The SDK may be used via interfaces to C, C++, C#, ActiveX and Java and additionally for Servlets and WebServices. SignWare also supports the biometric data interchange format for signature data that was prepared in the ISO with SOFTPRO's input.

The signature is the most popular and trusted feature for authentication as it is never given accidentally. It actively proves the signer's intent, which is significantly different from the use of passive biometrics - body characteristics such as finger, hand, face or iris.

Softpro's award winning product SignDoc is based on the SignWare Software Development Kit. SignDoc was voted as best Biometrics Application worldwide for the Tablet PC by Microsoft®. The international developer contest titled "Does Your Application Think in Ink?" attracted 260 global submissions from independent software vendors. SignDoc securely embeds a handwritten signature into a document which is compliant to the various e-sign laws. SignDoc also won Microsoft's national "Tablet PC Challenge" in Germany.
